How to Choose an App for Your Blood Glucose Meter

Understand what a glucose meter app can—and cannot—do, then decide whether manual logging, device sync, trends, and reports fit your workflow.

Your meter measures; the app organizes

A blood glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor uses compatible hardware to collect readings. A general tracking app records, imports, organizes, or displays those readings.

Glucose does not measure blood sugar through an iPhone camera, screen, or touch sensor. You need an appropriate meter or sensor and must follow its instructions.

Three common logging workflows

Manual logging

You take a reading with your meter and enter the result into Glucose. Manual entry works across many devices because it does not depend on a direct integration. It also means you are responsible for entering the value and unit correctly.

A supported device connection

The Glucose interface includes a flow for connecting supported meters and sensors. Availability can depend on the exact hardware model, app version, country, and permissions. Check the current connector inside the app before buying hardware or assuming a device is supported.

Apple Health as part of the workflow

Some devices or apps can share supported information through Apple Health. The current Glucose App Store listing states that Glucose writes inputted entries to Apple Health. That does not guarantee that Glucose imports every reading written by another device or app.

Questions to answer before choosing an app

  1. Is your exact meter or sensor model supported?
  2. Does the connection work in your country?
  3. Can you still add or correct an entry manually?
  4. Does the app use the same unit as your meter?
  5. Can you export the information your clinician wants?
  6. What happens if the device is offline or a sync fails?

For a safety-critical workflow, verify compatibility with the meter or sensor manufacturer as well as the app developer.

What Glucose adds after a reading

Once a reading is in your log, Glucose can keep it with insulin, medications, carbohydrates, meal timing, notes, A1C, blood pressure, weight, and ketones. You can review averages and trends or create a PDF or CSV report.

These views help organize information. They do not identify the cause of a high or low reading, replace alerts from a regulated device, or tell you how to treat it.

When a manufacturer app may be the better choice

Use the manufacturer's required app when it is needed to activate a device, receive real-time safety alerts, update hardware, or access a regulated feature. A broader logbook can complement that system, but it should not be described as a replacement for critical device software.
